Thirty-three percent of adolescents in the U.S. are a victim of physical, sexual, emotional or verbal abuse from a dating partner and this figure far exceeds rates of other types of youth violence.* That’s ONE in THREE. To address this growing issue, we kicked off a three-year partnership in early 2012 with Loveisrespect – a national initiative that focuses on preventing dating abuse and promotes healthy relationships.
Loveisrespect fosters healthy dating attitudes and relationships with comprehensive expert-created content on the Web. Our support works to enhance the immediate, peer-to-peer assistance available through Loveisrespect.org. Additionally, our partnership launched the “Start Talking” campaign that consists of tailored, on-the-ground, direct community outreach, education and training that spans Illinois, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas.
In fall 2013, “Start Talking” toolkits became available for distribution. The toolkits are designed to help youth start the conversation around healthy relationships, and the curriculum provides an innovative approach in dating violence prevention using peers within schools and communities to help drive the conversation and define relationships in their terms and discover for themselves what it means to have a safe and healthy relationship.
