Nutrition: Texas

Through the expansion of the Nutrition focus area of Healthy Kids, Healthy Families®, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas supports 11 impactful programs through local food banks to positively impact the health and wellness of children.

The food bank programs include:

  • Backpacks for Kids and Backpack Buddy, which provide backpacks of weekend food for school children at high risk of hunger
  • Kids Café, which serves warm meals to children participating in after-school programs in low-income neighborhoods
  • Share Our Strength’s Cooking Matters, whose nutrition education courses provide individuals, parents and school-aged children with the culinary skills necessary to make healthy food choices
  • Food pantry programs, which distribute non-perishable items and fresh produce to families and individuals
  • Fresh produce programs, such as Mobile Farmers’ Market Program, to help ensure families who reside in dense populations have access to fresh produce and other perishable items
  • Funding to help food banks cover critical program operating expenses
